Classes
Children are settled into classes of 4-8 members for the most part according to their age. At least until the age of 14 the class will be in the care of the same class teacher, who through this continuity, is able to form a close relationship with the child and their families. The child is always with this class teacher for the first part of the day, the ‘Main Lesson’ time. The class teacher principle is extended, sometimes in a modified form, into adolescence, figuring also in the way that the post-16 provision is structured.

The Main Lesson starts with a Morning Verse and a series of group and therapeutic activities to foster the security and well-being of the children, to form group relationships and to help them relate to the world around them. After that a topic from the Curriculum for the age-appropriate year is studied in an imaginative and artistic way, fully engaging the will. Mathematics, English, Science, History, Geography and other academic subjects are incorporated in the Main Lesson, with additional specialist tuition in certain of the subjects outside Main Lesson time, especially for exam-based courses. The children are taught in small groups for arts and crafts, music, eurythmy, games, swimming and gardening later in the day.

Gradually more emphasis is placed on the cultivation of independent thinking and judgement. With the onset of adolescence there is a change as the teachers appeal more to the unfolding power of the intellect. Homework may be set as appropriate for any of these lessons. Individual children’s needs are discussed in staff meetings, both in small groups and the whole staff together, and from this individual programmes are planned.

Staffing
The stability provided by our committed and skilled staff is a notable feature of the School. All staff are chosen for their capability and willingness to contribute to the successful running of the many and varied aspects of school life.

The Care Staff have a range of qualifications and experience. The human qualities of commitment and relevant experience, which are a vital core-element for any houseparent, are supplemented by a dual training programme to enhance both vocational skills, in accordance with national requirements and an understanding of Curative Education as practised in Steiner-based schools and homes throughout this country and beyond.

Most teaching staff have Steiner training as well as Department for Education and Skills recognised qualifications and several have further qualifications in eurythmy, art, speech and counselling. Teaching staff/pupil ratios are generous, with an average ratio of 1:3.

There is a programme of In-Service Training and regular seminars for all staff. An NVQ3 training programme for Houseparents is in place.

Philpots Manor is an Equal Opportunities employer and welcomes – and indeed attracts – staff members from a variety of national and ethnic backgrounds
